On September 17-18, the NetHelixEU consortium met at Cuprum Novum in WrocΕ‚aw for workshops and strategy sessions. KGHM CUPRUM sp. z o.o. – Centrum Badawczo-Rozwojowe hosted the event.
NetHelix targets specific problems in European mining. During the WrocΕ‚aw meeting, partners exchanged insights on:
πŸ”Έadvancing digital platforms for data-driven decision-making πŸ’»
πŸ”Έintegrating AI and sensor technologies to monitor operations in real time πŸ€–
πŸ”Έdeveloping solutions that strengthen both safety and sustainability 🌱
πŸ”Έpreparing upcoming demonstrations in real mining environments ⛏️
The list of partners is impressive. Among the research institutions we can name TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Ulm University, the National Technical University of Athens, and CSEM. On the technology company side, the consortium includes Sandvik, Satways Ltd, abaut GmbH, Plegma Labs, RISA Sicherheitsanalysen GmbH , Emphasis DigiWorld SA, Alpes Lasers, ASTRIAL GmbH, CyRIC | Cyprus Research & Innovation Center Ltd, ALTUS LSA S.A., SoReCC (Societal Resilience & Climate Change), MPlegal, VRUMP Industrial IoT Solutions, ESI Ltd. Engitec Systems International Ltd., EIT RawMaterials. In addition, there are mining operators such as Hellas Gold S.A. (Eldorado), Metlen Energy & Metals (Delfoi Mines), Omya, and Dundee Precious Metals Inc..

❓ Why does this collaboration work? Each partner solves different pieces of the same puzzle. Academics develop theories, tech companies build prototypes, miners test everything under extreme conditions. A safety sensor designed in a lab means nothing until it works reliably 800 meters underground with 40Β°C temperatures and high humidity.
⚠️ Mining today needs more than just more efficient machines. The safety of miners remains a priorityβ€”each year, about 12,000 people die in mines worldwide. Early warning systems and predictive analytics can significantly reduce these numbers.
🌍 Mining generates 4-7% of global CO2 emissions. The sector employs 4.5-5 million people directly. These numbers matter because every efficiency gain, every safety improvement, every environmental solution scales across thousands of operations worldwide.
The consortium is building digital tools that mining companies can actually use – not just impressive demos that work once in controlled conditions.
